    Windows Open File Manager software

Has anybody any experience in Open File Manager software for use on w2k and w2k3, StBernard is one of the few most known apps like this I think - do you have any others that you have used or can recommend ?

    Cheers,
    Sean

We used it years ago, IIRC, but i gotta be honest, i can't remember what for or whether it was any good or not. I've got a lovely St Bernards T-Shirt you can have if you want though :P

LOL - I'll let you keep the T-Shirt (may be a bit small for me ) They may give me my own if we go ahead and get the software - Do you use anything similar to StBernard now ?

I wouldn't use it again myself. I installed it on some file servers a couple of years back in order to backup any open files. I seem to remember that some strange faults occurred and removing it was a complete nightmare with many blue screens and angry clients.

I didn't touch it again. That was on Windows 2000 advanced server. Ofcourse new versions of St Bernards may be different, but I'm afraid I wouldn't touch it.

I may well be wrong but I thought that the new OS's (XP but I would have thought server OS's too) are now able to backup open files - the desktop backup systems I use certainly seem to. They use the Volume Shadow Copy Service.

Here you go - some info I just found:

    hope that helps,

Windows backup copes with open files fine, using volume shadow copy. You can program to the volume shadow service yourself if you want, but it gets a bit complicated...

Thanks guys, I do know about volume shadow copy, but this was for W2kAS which obviously doesn't have VSC We did try a number of different app, and none were really any good - but I can say that DriveSnapShot (recommended in another thread) is excellent and works with open files on W2k.
