Which forum software do you allow and why??

This Invision board is fast, PHP and Mysql compared to Ikonboard it is much faster.

Obviously some look better but that doesnt mean they are better on the old server resources.

    Thanks

With out a doubt it has to be vBulletin, you just really can't beat the admin interface, I've tried phpBB2 and sure it may look nice with it's defualt template, but the admin area sucks. Same goes for Invision.

Well - I can only comment on the user side of things - and I have to say I prefer Invision board over the others I have used, which is basically vBulletin and PHPBB and Ikonboard

I just prefer the looks - I'm not too sure on the speed of them all as they all are comparable to me - but that can obviously be down to the server and network.

VB - never been an admin/ mod on it so I cant comment

Ikonboard is a pile of ******* I despise it

XMB is owned by a friend of mine, and I know that it has gotten alot better (old versions didnt have encrypted databases.etc).

    IB - very cool board

phpBB - the one I use the most and hasnt let me down yet. (phpBB2 is a bit bloated though).

Invision would gain my recommendation, it's easy to install and runs like it's a well tuned motor.

Ikonboard gets my vote, but then the only other ones I've tried are YaBB (bit of a pain to admin, slightly clumsy interface) and Invision (very easy to use, but I simply prefer the Ikonboard UI again).

    All IMHO of course!

Also having used Ikonboard so much I can now customise it very easily since I'm familiar with the code! (Although it did take hours the first time!)

If your going for paid software then VBulletin Wins hands down.

But if your going for free software i really like tForum as it's very easy too customise, light on resources and has all the features you need to run a succesful bulletin board. http://www.tforumhacks.com

A client just received this on his ikonboard and is understandably concerned - any comments from anyone!?

I found you webpage then this Forum I saw an IB froum and I had to check if u where safe, and u where not ur password and username for ur Database server can easly been seen by the right person I'd unstall this forum and change to a php one like phpBB more secure or XMB is good.

Tell him to upgrade to invision board, as invision board is made by the old ikonboard dev team - so there are certain similarities, although iB has no holes AFAIK

Judging by the spelling and sentance structure of the guy who made the post I would guess he is 13 or 14, which means the hole would be well docmented as he has obviously read it from a dodgy site - which means that there would probably be a patch avalible.

I've been testing various forum software lately, mainly by helping people install their own boards etc. I think that V bulletin is obviously the best paid software.
However i used to think that PHPBB was the best free version, that is until lately when i have had several problems with the database and upgrading the actual software. I converted my forum to the latest invisionboard and i now think that it is much better, simple to use with lots of features.

Invisonboard ranks high with me however so does UBB. UBB to be truthful is probabaly the best paid forum software it's big downside is the price
