Just for info, we've moved to using rsnapshot instead of rdiff-backup. It's another incremental backup based on rsync. It's advantage is it's a lot easier to restore files.Originally Posted by pelinor

Hey,
Sorry to repost. Iv been having a look at this rsync.
Alot of the backups we will be making are .pst files. I’ve been testing it on my laptop and it appears to be uploading the whole pst again. Does rsync have the functionality to take the changes made in .pst and other files and just upload what’s new or changed?
TIA
Jon
I think rdiff is better for sending just changes
AFAICR thats the defualt behaviour of RSYNCOriginally Posted by JonRohan
Bear in mind certain file format, just altering 1 "byte" of theinternals of the document actually changes the entire file so it all needs uploading again as is "different" anyway.

Especially with PST files, they are pretty notorious for corrupting easily.

I thought that rsync natively just took the bit changes. Your probably right in saying that delelting some emails will change the structure of the pst.
I have probably at least 50-60 gb of pst files to be backed up every night so im keen to have something that will make light work of the changes..
Since it's Windows I'd strongly suggest that you take a look at Sync2Back. We've got it backup around 200GB of data each night and don't have any issues with corruption at all. They are a bit flakey indeed.

Let me know if you do take a look at it and need any help!

Ive got sync2back working perfectly it just can't go as quick as rsync (talking transfer rates). I use it on my laptop to backup my development work and normal working documents.
if the pst changed structure, rdiff would notice this. (it would be part of the diff, after all).
The problem is you might not save as much as you had hoped by doing diffs because significant parts of the file may change for only seemingly minor alterations at the front end.
