    Offsite backup Software

    Afternoon,

I've been having a good ol' search today for some decent offsite backup products. Rsync appears quite a lot along with ahsey which i've already used somewhat.

Anybody have any other suggestions of some decent offsite backup software? Primarily for windows systems.

    TIA.

You could look at SyncBack (http://www.2brightsparks.com/syncback/) - We've used it before and it's been excellent for scheduled backups over FTP, Tape, Shared Drives, etc.

It allows you to exclude certain files, produces reports of errors and there's a free version which includes most of the features you need for backups. The full version is about £16.00 and lets you backup locked/open files along with a few other features that are handy.

Find a host who has more than 1 datacentre linked via private fiber and doesn't charge for any transfer across it. Then you can colo a NAS box at one end and your servers at the over.

Now then, who to recommend eh

From the sounds of it he already has the computers/servers he wants to backup and wherever he wants to backup to, just wants a method to do it.

We use cygwin and rsync on windows boxes, free and it works fine for what we need.

    Thanks for your suggestions chaps.

SyncBack looks perfect, how good is it on bigger volumes? IE 100gig of CVs and index files?

Im going to take a look at that cygwin now.

When installing Cygwin make sure you install package"rsync" in the category "Net" as it isn't installed by default.

If you're looking at rsync you can also try rdiff - http://www.nongnu.org/rdiff-backup/ - essentially an incremental version of rsync.

Never managed to get it working on windows though...

Sync2nas is a handy windows front end / gui for rsync. It comes as an installer, no need to install cygwin seperately. I think if you've got quantities of data like that rsync is ideal as it will only send what's changed. You could mount the NAS drive and run it locally as a scheduled task.

Following on from my earlier post, just set up sync2nas with a Synology DiskStation and it works well.
