Thread: Cpanel

We have always used Plesk for our control panels but unfortunately Sw Soft are dropping the support for Redhat 7.3. on there next upgrade. I am looking for other control panel that will up support Apache 1.3. We have other servers running Fedora Core2 but they will only support Apache 2 and you aren't able to disable Suexec because it is required for Apache 2 to run.

So,
Will Cpanel work with Apache 1.3.x?
If not can I disable susexec in Cpanel?
Can you also make changes to the httpd.conf file without causing problems with Cpanel like scriptalias?

Yes on all 3 counts (1 and 2 are standard)

Aye, cPanel also tends to break in an apache 2 enviroment.

I cant comment with regards to Plesk (never used it), but if its anything like Ensim - I can see where your coming from with the httpd.conf re-writes (ie, Ensim goes nuts if you do anything outside of its interface).

cPanel is generally more relaxed with regards to modifying areas on the server - I certainly have never had an issue where cPanel has had a fit if you do something in the shell (which 9 times out of 10 I do anyway).

I think cPanel makes enough of a mess to httpd.conf to not notice when we mere humans make adjustments

It is pretty flexible. We've hacked away at httpd.conf, installed extra modules and settings, changed the IPs it listens on and so on, and it hasn't complained nor reverted the changes

Plesk works fine with httpd.conf changes globally, and you can make per-vhost changes in specific files it creates in each vhost directory. His problem is that SWsoft EOL'd support for old OS's such as RH73 meaning they no longer support Apache1.3.

There's various Tyan distributors you can get them from depending on quantity. They've been very reliable so far.

Yes to all your questions (as others have mentioned). The only file that seems to get overwritten by cpanel (unless you modify through their whm-based editor) is exim.conf.

I've worked with Plesk and Ensim both - things are good if you work through their panel. If you try to edit anything manually, kiss your changes goodbye on the next change. :-D

Both Plesk and Ensim allow you to put your changes in custom files, so they are not wiped out by further "global" reconfigurations using the panel.

Rather than change control system and potentially alienate the userbase, would it not be simpler to move onto a later and supported O/S ?
