Thread: Who is good at this t'internet providing stuff?

  1. #16
Another hearty recommendation for Be*. Took BT three weeks (!) to reactivate my line, and just 5 days for Be to get it activated. Courier arrived with modem 24 hours after placing order, I plugged everything in and got 8 meg right out of the box (Stupid BT, giving me a 2.6km line where it's 1.6km to the exchange, following the trunking...).

Initially signed up for Be Pro (24 meg down, 4 meg up), and got 8 meg down 1.4 meg up - had a chat to a very friendly tech support representative (obviously indian, but really at the top of his league.. he understood everything, even when i mentioned I was calling over Skype, so i'd call back after he'd rebooted the router!) - bv turning off the upload plus, we got it to 10 meg down, 1 meg up - which i'm pleased with. Dropped down seamlessly to Be Pro (the one with no upload speed increase - didn't need it), kept my static IP.

Best of all... if you're having line speed issues, you can call them up and say in these very words "Hey, I'm having some troubles with a line with a high SNR but high loss - can you drop the SNR envelope down to 3dB, and retrain?" - and they will understand exactly what you're saying, and comply. Compared to BT this is legendary!

Never again will I deal with BT and their little walled garden support departments - "talk to broadband" - "talk to faults" - "Talk to billing" - "talk to broadband...."

Wait was that a bit of shameless self promotion? It's generally not welcomed around here.....

Wow you must be on some magical line. That is unless you was on hold to Pipex support for 4 years and didn't notice your line drop?

I would expect this to be down to the router not being as good, rather than Sky ADSL not working as well via wireless...

Idnet do not have a !Gb Cap. They have a number of differing packages with allowences which if you go above are charged at £1.00 per Gb and you are sent an advisory email if you are approching the allowance. They do not cap, restrict or in any other way control your connection.

You really ought to get your facts right.

So you call it an allowance instead of a cap. It's the same thing.

They have put a capping system in place now though that means if you download more than 4GB in 4 hours your connection will be limited to 5Mbit for 4 hours. This is only between the hours of 4 and midnight, which inst too bad.
The most annoying part of that is if you hit your limit at say 11:55PM you are cut to the reduced limit for four hours FROM when you go over... Which gets annoying if your nocturnal!

You always get 20mb? Think we average at about 18.5mb with our 20mb package, certainly intrested in the 50mb package now the price has come down.

The 50Mbps Virgin Media service rocks! I haven't seen my connection dip significantly below 50Mbps (maybe as low as 45Mbps at peak times). Need to upgrade my laptop's wireless now though

I must agree that since taking out Virgin last october its been amazing. I have had zero downtime, and its rock solid speed and reliability.

Also like the traffic management policy which avoids monthly quotas... so I can go on the occasional download whoring without worrying about downloading too much!
