Thread: Petition against Phorm

Even if you did block the cookies your data is still copied, read and processed. Besides - the cookie opt out only stops the ads being shown to you. Your data is still processed.

Not every site is running ssl.

Let me give an example of this site. There is a secret 'Web Hosts Only Section'. In that section some of you could be posting

"Larry David is a ****. Buy shares in Acme. Let's go blow a goat".

That is private to you guys; copyright of this website owner.

Now if one of you is browsing via one of the big 3 ISPs then that information about Larry, Acme and goats will be read and processed by the Phorm system.

This should now be snowball week - where the masses get to hear about it and this whole stupid idea dropped.

When 'the father of the web' says he will change ISP if his introduced it then that pretty much means the game is up.

Think there was going to something on bbc breakfast about it too, but couldn't hang around to watch. Gradually getting more attention; I'd be hopeful that it was enough to put the companies off, but they probably stand to make more money than they'll lose from customers who can be bothered to move away.

I'm sure the beancounters have factored in that they can lose x% customers but gain xx% profit from customers who stay.

But they never factored in that they could be forced to make this opt-in.

The plan could only work if everyone was automatically signed up to webwise and the onus was on individuals to opt-out.

They would never have factored that the Phorm share price would take such a hit with all the negative publicity.

And they would never have factored that they contravened RIPA / DPA laws in their covert trials last summer and that they could be hit with large fines and lose all credibility due to the way they "lied" about those tests.

Sounds like they'll sell the opt-in as "opt in to this fantastic new feature with a fancy name that implies it improves your connection, without actually telling you what it really does! it's free!" - and if so, most people will click because they don't know better. Still, fingers crossed.

The problem I have is that there's no BT line in my house (well, there's an unterminated wire floating in the under floor void in the hall, presumably from when the cable was installed by the previous owner) and BT want £100 to re-connect

As the cracks in HMS Phorm start to get bigger I see VM as the first to abandon ship.

CPW have donned life jackets and are holing up in the crows nest whilst BT say "Cap'n, I see no iceberg. Full steam ahead."
