Yup, welcome to the real world. Unfortunately, if you're on DSL it is range limited by the distance from the phone exchange (i.e. the further you get from the exchange, the worse the signal gets, the lower the speed the modem can sync at). Check your ADSL modem to see what speed it is syncing at.
The other problem is that ISPs have to contend their bandwidth in order to make a profit. This means that you share your bandwidth with their other customers. Some ISPs content their bandwidth too heavily so you're sharing with so many customers you can never get a decent speed, but I've got no experience of Kingston in this regard.
