Need to find an ADSL provider

Hi guys,
sorry to bother after such a long and quiet time, but I need to find a half decent ADSL provider that isn't just any of the consumer one. This will be set up as a business account, and I'd rather prefere to avoid BT, Tiscali (Pipex), Sky... well the big ones really. One thing I don't want is a cap limit.

So, any idea of where to go for a reliable shop?

What speed do you want ?
Max or Traditional (i.e. fixed or variable contention) ?

An other services (mail, domain, dns, hosting) or strictly connection ?

A tipical 20:1 contention rate would be fine.

I need to provide this ADSL line to the location of a contractor that will do some software development work. If I had to put limits I would say that I would like to see 1mbit/s upload speed and a FAST type connection: it just makes it more reactive when dealing with the Subserve Server.

Download I am not too concerned about and static IP is not a necessity, though welcome as it would make security settings a lot better.

Still I don't like the idea of cap limits

Well, for over 750Kbps upload you're going to have to go with ADSL2+ which means LLU or bonding of two lines unless you can get SDSL (which costs a fortune comparatively)

I think I'll wave the flag here! We can do all of above, ipstream capped and un-capped, datastream, wholesale LLU, SDSL, LLines etc. Drop me a PM or take a look.. Cheers

We probably all can, but as its outside of the advertising forums no-one else wh0red themselves quite as much Pete

Back on topic - what's the budget as 1mbit/s upload speed gets you into SDSL, bonded ADSL, or CN21/ADSL2 territory ?

Cap limits are fine as long as they're realistic to your usage - if you really are handling 1mb/s up/down, then a limit of 300Gb/month is very manageable

Oh, and where is the line ( postcode ) as that can limit your possibilties.

Othello,
though my company is in the UK, there are several reasons not to live in it: one of which is the "peculiar" ADSL service conditions. Over here I have a 10mb/1mb at like £23+VAT, it's in fast, is residential and don't have a cap limit nor strange stuff like "fair usage".

My budget is between 20 to 30 ex VAT per month. Download is not important, upload is, and I can have the guy live with 512k, it isn't like he is going to die, you know! I still remember when I used to go on the 'net via UUCP with a 14400b modem back in '91, and I surviverd , so can he with 512k. But really, for the type of job, I'd rather not go less then 512k.

Bonding, IMHO, is more trouble then what it is worth, so I won't go that path. Regarding the postcode, let me enquire

That is why you give it to a company to provide as a fully managed service, OOB access, full hands off to yourselves... I can think of at least one that offers this ;-)

I've been with Be for a couple of months now and I'm pretty impressed. If you don't want to use the bebox (and I wouldn't) the setup is a bit quirky but other than that I can't fault them.

In the end the person decided to go and sort this out on his own, so I am out of the game.

Still this is an interesting thread and I will refere to it once that I get further needs.

Thanks to all!

At home I use a Be Unlimited ADSL2 connection @ 4 KM from the exchange my line is synced at 16 Mbit/s. My upstream is 1.2 Mbit/s and a fixed IP comes as part of the package for £18 /month.

Never had a problem but at stephend said put the Bebox in the bin and get yourself a decent router. Also the BeBox / BT Homehub / O2 Box are all based on Thompson Speedtouch routers which have a known bug in them when streaming flash video i.e. iPlayer.

Saying that, you do need a Bebox because if you have line problems and the box isn't plugged in then Be aren't interested.

Or if your really anal like me clone the MAC address of your Be Box and they will never know! Best hardware is a WRT54G box running OpenWRT.
