A customer of mine is using Smile Broadband for their satellite provision, but it is very ropey at the best of times. We're currently looking to move them away from it, and get onto an EPS9 solution (SDSL between 2 lines on the same exchange).

Ah ha

There is only one serious broadband by satellite provider in the UK. The companies name is INMARSAT. They deliver services for shipping and road fleets. They also do Television uploads. So the next time you are watching CNN and you see a report giving a report from the desert and the pictures all hazy. Thats the provider.

They offer two technolgy types. A WAP type service and a full blown TCP/IP service. The piece of equipment they use is called BGAN. This is a satellite box about the size of a laptop. It comes with a compass to find the satellite direction and then uses GPS to pinpoint your exact location and give a perfect fix on the satellite.

This service does not come cheap. £1000 once off fee for the BGAN receiver and £10/meg (Thats Mb NOT GB). So not something for the faint hearted. But if you are in a business that will give you a return. Then go for it.

The link to their site is: http://www.inmarsat.com/

If forgot to add: Inmarsay will be launching a 1.44 and 2 meg service this year, if not already launched.
