Synchronous (eg both at the same time)

SDSL has the same upload speed as download speed (eg 2mb/2mb), whereas ADSL has a slower upload speed than download speed eg, (1mb/256k)

S stands for Symmetric and the proper term is SHDSL not SDSL. Damn, I sound like my old Physics teacher

For the technically minded who want to know more about it, rather than just use it, see http://www.dslforum.org/aboutdsl/shdsl_faq.html which should more than satisfy.

Lightbulb

As a general-interest point, some providers (Specifically I know Bulldog do but I'm not sure about others) are now offering up to 4 Mbit/sec SDSL in areas where they have unbundled the Local Loop (LLU) at the local BT exchange, subject to the usual line quality tests etc. of course, and presumably the operating distance is significantly shorter.

Maybe one day we'll catch up with the Europeans and their 10Mbit/sec cable at home for about £40/month! We can but hope...
