Why I agree with Jamie talking is the best thing, simply explain that if he configures the torrent client a bit better that he'll get more out of it in the long term. By limiting the bandwidth at set times and the number of connections. I can play an online game at the same time as downloading an ISO because i've set my client up right.

Otherwise you can bolt down the router (assuming it's your router and connection) and simply only allow him access to certain ports or packet shape him yourself but that not likly to make friends with him.
I am not concerned about making friends with him, I just need to know over a couple of days how much bandwidth or what he is downloading and when.

I am happy to speak to him once I know but if I accuse him without facts then it makes me look worse.

You could always reset your router and then login in a couple of days and see how much has gone downstream/upstream?

That could work actually but would still be looking for something a little more detailed.

What the ****? Just ask him, yo dude are you rinsing out the bandwidth because the internet is slow as **** right now? If he says no, then say ok I guess I'll speak to Virgin.

Then you can go and do your investigative work.

If you turn up and be like, i've been tracking your usage and you are raping it, how does that make you look?

Stick a linux box in the middle to act as a gateway and have all internet traffic go through that with full logging? You'd also be able to run it as a HW Firewall

Ok so if you want to see the bandwidth it's fairly simple.

    1. Get IPCOP or similiar, set it up as the router on an old machine.
    2. Point his machine to that router.
    3. Look at the bandwidth graphs + NAT stats. Will show you whats up.

If you aren't sure how to get to point 2. it's very simple just changed your routers IP to something else and then put the IPCOP router in it's place. You can then point the IPCOP router to your existing router and you can point your machine at the primary router if you want to isolate just his traffic.

I certainly don't want to appear is if I watch too much 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' by addressing him by saying "Yo!" :P

The reason why I want to check to see if my assumptions are correct, not to necessarily catch him out then approach him by saying I am spying. Once I know I can contact Virgin then ask myself.

IF I know he is mass downloading then he lies, I will be in a much better position to act accordingly.

Maybe I had a problem. Two evenings ago I was trying to download a 400mb website for a transfer by ftp (something I have done easily before on 20mps) but it would not have it. Had to download it in packets in the end.

WAs the actual transfer slow aswell? From what you describe it is the FTP connection getting terminated which can mean all sorts of things.

Yes it was the transfer speed that caused the FTP to time out and crash.
