    Question Virgin media 10GP Cap

Can anybody tell me if users of Virgin Media XL internet package have experienced a download cap or massive speed decreases after a day of high usage?

    See table here:

Virgin Media Broadband:Traffic management - & Traffic management

XXL is not throttled, XL is.

Matt, Jon - Thank you for your posts.

I have read the Virgin Media link and i am concerned. I am an XL customer but when I log in to Virgin is says XL - 10mb not 20mb?

    Are Virgin being dodgy?

Personally I like the virgin traffic policy. I was on XL and found I could use and abuse the connection extremely well, rarely throttled. Now on XXL so don't have to even think about it... but its better than a lot of ISPs for this type of thing.

Give them a call, XL should be 20mb not 10mb.

Fundamentally I have a lodger that i fear is downloading heavily using utorrent or such like. I know I can block the ports uTorrent uses but I think he randomises. Anyway, i'm only 99.9999% sure so I am looking for a program that I can install onto my Mac or Windows laptop at home that can monitor what traffic he is using from his laptop.

Does anyone know of such a program?

Interesting.... Please could you elaborate on packet sniffers? I don't think he will be encrypting.

    Thanks

Packet sniffers arent the way forward Chris, just have a word with him, tell him that if he is leeching, its going to result in capping, and just tell him not to use torrents.. they're dirty vile things anyway.

Either that, or tell him to get his own DSL

Thanks Jamie... I would speak to him but I feart he would ignore me or keep his laptop on downloading (Poss with remote connection) whilst he & I are at work. I just need to check if he really is downloading heavily because one I know as a fact I can then force him to stop.

I'm not a big user of packet sniffer and haven't use one in years i hear a bit about Wireshark.

Why I agree with Jamie talking is the best thing, simply explain that if he configures the torrent client a bit better that he'll get more out of it in the long term. By limiting the bandwidth at set times and the number of connections. I can play an online game at the same time as downloading an ISO because i've set my client up right.

Otherwise you can bolt down the router (assuming it's your router and connection) and simply only allow him access to certain ports or packet shape him yourself but that not likly to make friends with him.
