Activity Query

hey newbie here.
just a question which could be totally stupid but with my limited knowledge of the internet is sorta baffling me. I'm a broadband user with a 2mb ukonline line which i have had for a couple of months. I haven't had any problems with them or connecting at all but at first I found my sent actitivity was fairly normal (a lot lower than my recieved activity). I rarely use any sharing software like limewire and I dont leave my torrents open (I know im a ****head and it wont help my rating in the longterm) so i dont expect my upload activity to be high. anywayz recently this has totally flipped, although my download speed has remained the same lookin at the infomation from Voyager 105 ADSL modem connection I have often uploaded more than I have downloaded. Take now for example, although i have been downloading this evening with bit torrent so probably not a great example my download amount is 781,000,000 bytes and upload amount 521,000,000 bytes. Without the downloads and just normal page browsing or streaming videos it will always be much higher upload activity. Is this normal?
otherwise could there be any explanation? virus or spyware? software sending to other peers not running in the taskbar? any help please....

The most likely explanation I would have thought is that some little nasty has got onto your computer and your machine is now doing one or more of the following:

a) Sending out spam
b) Taking part in ddos attacks
c) Spreading the nasty to other machines
d) Sending out logs of everything you type

And anything else I've forgotten.

I would suggest you make sure you have an up to date virus scanner and give your machine a thorough scan, also use something such as Lavasoft's ad-aware to scan for spyware etc.

a lot of file sharing software even when you're not downloading will share your files and hence you'll have background upload activity.. make sure they're not running. also as someone else says if its not a p2p app you likely have either a virus or spyware...
