I think I'm swaying towards the 360. As far as I can tell, there's very little difference in the offline gaming experience, but the 360 edges it with online if I wanted to pay for that. It's also a bit cheaper, and it has a few exclusives I thought looked good. And as I'm a cheapskate, I won't want to pay for a live gold subscription, so I'll get to keep some of my free time and hopefully won't lose my girlfriend.

I know blu-ray is a major selling point for the ps3, and if I had an HDTV today that would probably swing it - but I won't have one for at least another couple of years, and even then I'll probably want a separate dedicated blu-ray player.

Still not 100% though. Might head into town tomorrow and see if they have any reasonable bundles that will help me make up my mind. And that way I can pretend it's an impulse buy, which is always more fun

These days you get 3 year warranty. I got my 360 when it came out still going strong! Seems to be a bit of chance whether yours gets ****ed or not.

Had one RROD, but it was promptly replaced and brand new one up and running the same day.

When I bought my 360, it wouldnt read any disks, of course, it wouldnt tell me it couldn't read them, it just didnt read them, no error lights, no error in dashboard - had to return to microsoft to be fixed, which took about 2 weeks.

Not had any problems with the PS3 though, but I never really play either of them.

    I've got both (and a wii )

If you want a console for gaming, go for the 360

If you want to game but also have the media side, i.e. bluray, go for the ps3

Thanks for all the comments for and against both, but I ended up going for a 360 - partly for the back catalogue, and partly because I know people with a 360 should I ever want to play them online. Got the elite, but still need an extra cable for 1080p; have discovered my monitor can't do it over component, typical! But other than that it's all looking good, no red rings yet!

For what it's worth, the girl in the shop said the red rings aren't a problem with the new models, it was just the old ones - although as she was trying to make a sale it's true that it's not exactly impartial advice

The old one is prone to that.

The Elite has a superior cooling system which take cares of it mostly.

Splendid! Although I doubt my carpet is particularly good at heat dissipation. Perhaps I should steal the glass surface protector from the kitchen to sit it on

Mines under my tv stand next to my ps3 and wii, above that my surround sound kit, dvd player and sky.

And yeah, sat on the carpet. Had it nearly a year now and it seems fine.

Best tip, just dont leave it on...

BTW, if you are after gaming recommendations, check out our forums / blog. A few of us are obsessed with our games and latest releases. Or drop me a pm / msn whatever with some details on what kind of games you like. I've been gaming non stop since nappies
