I have Win XP Home Edition. With Itunes loaded, it does not recognize the ipod, nor will it format it, without reloading Itunes then reformatting. Is there any way around this? Apart from being long winded, I do not want to lose the many hours of music I have loaded.
Weird I have the same problem, it started last night with my ipod nano. When I plug it in, the system detects the device and it comes up as a drive in My Computer. But the Itunes software doesn't take over the control of the device or detect it. I'm gonna look it up when I have time so i'll let you know if I find anything.
I have tried updating the software, but no good. I have asked so called experts, but no one seems to know the answer. I look forward to someone solving this one.
I've no idea how ipods connect, so i'm guessing...
If it just connects as a mass storage device (similar to most usb drives) it could be that it's trying to use a drive letter that is already in use.
In computer management (compmgmt.msc /s) --> Storage -> Disk Management. Check to see if the device is showing there but is showing as using a drive letter already in use. If it is.. right click and choose "Change Drive Letter and Paths" and chose another drive letter.
If Ipods dont' connect as storage devices... then sorry can't help ya.

My views are my own and not those of my company.
I have a iPod video ( 30gb ). Even though I have set iTunes to automatically load iTuneswhen I connect my iPod it does not. I have not seen the issue you have posted though. Using Win XP Home ( SP2 )
