Exclamation iPod disk usage

hello everyone, i have a question.

I need to do a system restore, and reinstall my windows xp program. but ive got a ton of music i got off of itunes, like 4-5 gigs of it. and its gonna take like, 50 CDRs to back them up. I was wondering, if i could just stick them on to my ipod, reload my windows and then copy them back to my computers hard drive?

also, im not sure if i can or not, because then i would have to reinstall the ipod software and itunes and all of that, and i know it has to reformatt the ipod itself.
just wondering if i could use it without reformatting it.

thanks!

4-5 gigs of music == 8cd's. OR you could buy a DVD writer and they'll fit on a single double layer DVD, or a Single layer DVD and a cd

http://www.ipodcopy.com/ - That software will allow you to grab your music off the ipod back to your PC.

In the future it might be worth sticking your music on a separate partition which can be kept intact should you need to reformat your OS partition.

Best thing is to have seperate hard drives for anything important like music etc.. then you can install and reinstall windows to your hearts content without deleteing stuff.

I have got that setup. All my music is on an external hard drive. I did it mainly to speed my computer because with about 20gb of music it soon fills your normal HD.

Another idea is to put all yours songs on your ipod then transfer them back. there is another topic with information on transferring songs from your ipod to your computer.

Don't the iTunes/WMP stuff tag the files so can't be played on another machine? Or is that just me listening to the voices inside my head? Wiping windows would get rid of the download keys? Or is that inside the audio files itself?

*shrugs*
Probably just me rambling - if wrong, please ignore.

There is some sort protection on them. but I am not sure how far that goes, plus it is only on files from itunes shop.

i would definatly check that out on something like ilounge.com or something before reformatting your computer.

If you are reinstalling the same windows version from the same disk it may be ok.

who knows??????

Dave.
