ADSL routers, are they all rubbish?
It has finally got to me enough
I am on my 4th adsl router in less than a year now and so far they all reconnect after about 30 minutes non stop dropping SSH connections and some don't work at all.
So my question is, what router do you use and is it goood

I have a Netgear DG834G at home. Been dropping connections non-stop for the last hour but then it is thunder and lightening outside and the road is a river at the moment after a mass downpour of rain.
Usually it is pretty solid.
In the office we have a Belkin but not sure of the model. Never had issues with that.

On VirginMedia myself (at home)
Netgear FVM318 is the main one... It's completely trouble free and been up for months without reboot, although I did reset it yesterday thanks to VirginMedia taking a dump.
D-Link DI-704P (HW:C1) in my room, all services disabled however, simply acts as a switch. Also trouble free.

I always used to have problems with ADSL and getting dropped when I was with freeserve. Since moving to cable I have been so much happier until recently when Virgin Media took over and now it's gone down hill so I am on the look out for a new provider that is reliable.
With the ADSL I first of all had an Alcatel modem I think which seemed to work ok but as soon as I switched to using a netgear router thats where the problems mainly started. Can't remember which model it was but it was only about £80 a few years ago.

Tried a bunch of Netgear & Belkin ones and all have had some sort of issues, with a fair few failing totally after a while. Think I'll go for Linksys/Cisco next time round to see what they offer...

Get yourself a Safecom wireless ADSL router (sometimes sold under the Guru brand). We've used them for years and they are fantastic for the money, ours were about £60, but have wireless and can do IPSEC VPNs as well, great bits of kit.

I've got to say, i'm on Telewest/NTL/Virgin and have been for about 5 years. I can't really say that i've had any downtime that wasn't caused by a dodgy router.
I had a Netgear that i absolutely detested - give it some bittorrent, and the wireless crashed after about 5 minutes, although it never had a problem if you did it through the wired network.
Weirdly, it took me about 2-3 years to replace it

I used Draytek a long time ago - the only issue i ever had with it (it ran the offices broadband) was with a dodgy psu.
I managed to get rid of the netgear to a family friend who only ever uses it to browse the web about once a week, and periodically check email.
I hate to think what he'll say if he tries anything that involves lots of connections (i actually sold it to him for a whole tenner)!

I'd forgotten about Draytek. I used to have a Vigor at a previous job which was pretty good, but at that time the plusnet line it was connected to gave us infinitely more problems than the router

Netgear DG834 - 3 years old and still going strong on one line
The other dsl line had a Zyxel 400 which never gave any problems in the 14months of usage.
