    UK Network

    Hi Guys.

I currently thinking about setting up a network over a large geographic area from a couple of sites in London to hampshire, manchester. i was just wondering whether it is possable to lay fibre adjacent to train lines, motorways etc.

thinking to setup colo facilities in all 3 of those areas.,

    thanks

    Jay

You're not going to get far with that budget. It needs increasing substantially to get anywhere near what you're looking to do.

Is this for a Uni project?

    Or an actual corporate?

No one other than the Highways agency tend to run fibre down the motorways, for two reasons 1) because dealing with the highways agency is different than obtaining code powers that allow you to dig up 'normal' roads, and 2) at some point your fibre will become disturbed and/or unreachable when the motorway network is inevitably expanded/widened. Fibre that you could have laid next to the M1 10 years ago would now be in the middle of lane 2 never to be seen again!

Global Crossing have already done the train line thing, and are quite desperate to sell that fibre at the moment.

Any other 'dig' of fibre you would be looking at approx £65-£80/meter for road and footpaths, grass verges will be less (approx £35/meter)

    Hope this may help.

Actually your correct, we had a fibre splice point up last week on the Fibreway (which is the fibre that runs down the canals) and it was flooded, as the ducts were below the water level on the footpath!

Expanding on Easynet, the fibreway system is actually sub-ducted into 4 seperate smaller ducts, Easynet own most of these (via acquisitions) however in some area's other providers may have one sub duct on the fibreway network.

Sounds reminiscent of one of the London cable companies (can't remember which one it was). All other UK cable companies used to site equipment in street cabinets, but this one copied an american firm which put the equipment in underground pits. They forgot that it rained a whole lot more in the UK and eventually gave up that practice.
