Possible idea

Hi Guys,

We are looking to rent a unit located in the city of Cambridge to host our servers from there. Sorting out the power and cooling isn't really an issue however the networking side is. I've looked at the idea of using bt's mpls to link our unit back to London where we would have our own router and transit feeds into that.

We are currently pushing around 100-130Mbit in/out on our current gig uplink so would need a big connection and room to expand if needed. Does anyone have any advice or better suggestions to how this should be done?

Are you looking to do the networking in-house (Install and manage your own routers, buy your own transit, set up your own peering, rent space in the docklands for your terminating equipment, install the backhaul network etc.) or just buy the service off someone who will do it all for you?
One thing to remember above all others - diversity. Of course, just how important uptime is to you and your customers, the service that they are paying for etc. determines what is required and what can be afforded diversity wise, but it;s one place you really don't want to skimp.
Having a fleet of powered and cooled servers is completely useless without an internet connection.

freethought,

Thanks for your reply. We want to do this in house. I can get a router sorted however its the link between our unit and the dc which is the issue.

This company (wizards: Server Colocation facilities) have a data-centre in Huntingdon if that is any use to you. Dunno how big it is - if you call, ask for Chris and tell him I sent you

BT MPLS - boy you must have deep pockets - We've just removed a corporates (two year old) BT MPLS and provided around ten times the bandwidth in each location and halved their WAN bill.

If this is a serious proposal, or even if you want outline costings, drop me a PM with your full site address and which DC you want it to, plus how much resilience you want and I'll give you a quote. I promise you I'll destroy your BT quote...
