Bind & DHCP

Last week, I started changing over our office network from using windows DNS to use Bind with DHCP. I've got it running pretty smoothly :-) Even got active directory working at the first attempt.

Now, what's puzzling me now is .. How do I best handle automatic dns entries? I mean the entries are written into the config and when my cronjob that I created runs every hour the entries are visible - Is it possible to make it so when a new machine is plugged into the network the dns entry is active instantly rather than every hour when my cronjob runs? I've googled it and every method other than running a cronjob to restart named seem's long winded and very messy - is there a simple way to perform this?

Easy solution - use http://www.thekelleys.org.uk/dnsmasq/doc.html]DNSMasq instead.

Harder solution (possibly you need BIND for other things too):
How To Configure Dynamic DNS (Fedora Core 4 Setup) | HowtoForge - Linux Howtos and Tutorials

I'm not really sure how your setup works but if its just bind you need to refresh the config for if you get rndc setup for localhost (it comes with a tool to dump a sample config) access a simple "rndc reload <zone>" will reload the single zone you've changed.

I managed to get DHCP to update bind in real time

Thanks for the links - now to keep bashing Active Directory with a big hammer!

Normal hammers don't even make a dent on active directory, you need something powered. A jack hammer is a good start but I'd say go for a full blown digger - that's if you can't afford a wrecking ball!

What you trying to do with AD?

We've got issues with Group Policies and the Domain Controllers not being able to see them.

It's a tad annoying!
