Thread: Home wireless networking question

  1. #1

    Home wireless networking question

I've had zero experiance with wireless networking so this might sound like a daft question

Is there a way to connect 2 cards without a access point?

I want to put my son on my home network but don't want to run a cable in to his room, too much hassle, and I don't want to have to buy another router I like the one I have, so I thought if I can put a wireless network card in each machine and bridge the one in mine to the other wired card, it might work?

If the cards support it you can create an ad hoc network between them - no need for an access point.

    Thanks I've already got some

    d-link Air+ 802.11g if that means anything

problem is I can't get them to work together right, they sort of see each other but keep disconnecting, and I've just been talking to someone and he claims that I won't be able to use them to access the net from the other computer or browse the network

Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

Not off the top of my head, but you'll need to use internet connection sharing and set IP's on both machines before you can get anywhere with it...

I've tried setting up ICS but for some reason my computer says
An error occured while Internet connection sharing was being enabled
The dependency service or group failed to start

And I also assigned IP's to each machine, I'm not a novice when it comes to wired networking but this wireless thing has got me stumped

Firstly you would need to set both adapters to obtain an IP automaticly before performing the ICS wizard.
Secondly you should set an encryption method and key for them. Some dont like working without encryption atall. Say 128bit WEP should be enough for anyone.
Next you shoul dcheck the drivers for channel usage and connection/negotiation speeds etc.
I would suggest setting these at minimum (unless you cant) perhaps something like 802.11b ( around 11/22mbit per second).
Once you have them both working on the slower rate, you can safely turn them up. But to ensure compatability its best to use basic settings.
Have a good look through the device properties and make sure everything looks to be set at a basic level to stand best chance of simply connecting without complications.
Your better looking at it, than for it. (ok i know thats an electricians term, but it works well here. Old habbits die hard).

    Best of luck.
(wow, i just realised this is a really old thread, heh.)
