    Rec. for roaming AP

Looking for some APs to create a secure(!) roaming WiFi network in a large building. Used some Buffalo kit in the past but was unimpressed,TBH (Although that was some time ago)

Anyone got any preferences / warnings?

The Pre-N kit is worth looking at, I have heard reports of one access point covering five floors of a building.

Alternatively, you could also look into WiMax, I gather it's being rolled out in the States, but to mixed reviews.

A third option is to use the existing electrical wiring infrastructure to carry data.

For simplicity and best performance right now, it's Pre-N.

WiMAX is not ratified by the RA in this country.

Investigate either the Motorola Canopy products or the Proxim Tsunami (MP11 or MP11a)/AP-2500 platforms.

Once the actual IEEE802.1n standard is fixed probably, however IEEE802.1g has only just been ratified for outdoor use.

The typical delay for approval for use in the 2.4/5.0GHz ISM band is 36-48 months.

    Interesting -

I was in Monaco recently, there are no plans (nor can anyone get authorisation) to push WiFi out into the port area. The rumour is WiFi is being ignored and a WiMax infrastructure is going in.

There are some hotels running Wifi, though you have to be a guest to use it...

Getting back to the original question, though, for now I reckon Pre-N is the better option for range right now.

    Or a Pringles tube.
