Do you need one combined with ADSL/Cable or stand alone?

I am not gunna lie i dont no anything about wireless networks,
But i have an NTL ADSL line and i need to filter out 3 pcs, dont need a great reach just so i can use the laptop in the garden,
You need what's commonly referred to as a "wireless broadband router" - ethernet port on the wan side and one or more ethernet ports on the lan side, plus your wireless aerial. There's a number of products from most manufacturers that will fulfill this role happily and well under your price point, though you'll need to factor in the costs of wireless cards if you need any.

Hello, Companies Act 2006. Because looking information up at Companies House is very very difficult indeed (especially as they think the Internet closes at night), and this post could possibly be construed as a business communication, I am legally required to furnish you with the following information: Low Cost Host Ltd - Reg# 5172812, VAT# GB 842 9750 02 Correspondence address PO Box 11, Brighouse, W Yorks, HD6 1LQ Registered address c/o Allan P Naylor Accountant, 8 King Cross St, Halifax, W Yorks, HX1 2SH Inside leg measurement 31in (or 78.74cm) Favourite colour Blue Attitude towards ridiculous legislation Incredulous
You might want to check out netgear access points (which are ADSL/Cable modems, wirless routers, firewalls) built into one unit. The nice thing about them is that you don;t need to locate them next to a PC - but they do need to be positioned near a phone line / cable point.
The reason I mention Netgear is that they currently are doing a free adapter with the access point.
Good luck,
Rupert
I've ordered a Dlink 604T (i think) (with a higher gain aerial) to use at my girlfriends, mostly because my crappy powerbook doesn't get signal from the Speedtouch she's using... Should arrive tomorrow... Alas, eBuyer being losers don't seem to have shipped the aerial, so I don't think I'll be able to test it and have it all by Friday pre-9am.
I'll let you know how it goes config wise when I get back from London, aslong as no one at home misses the sodding delivery.
Other than that, I've got a WAP54G, it "just works", and I've been happy with it. My powerbook does sometimes struggle to get signal upstairs, and sometimes drops out. Generally though, with an external wireless cards on other laptops it's been fine..
I've had good reports from Dlinks, so we'll see how it goes. Multiplay UK use them for "blueteam" wireless, (core network team) and from admining them there, I was pretty pleased.![]()
I would recommend netgear and some toogles.
I bought a Belkin ADSL Wireless router about 3 years ago from PC world.
Well last month it faulted. I phoned up their customer services and i sent my router off to them and they gave me a brand spanking new one about 7 days later. I was pretty impressed they sent me a new one in the same month :O
Keep it mind:
Rather old thread, but yes, has the potential to be useful for other users in the future![]()
