Wireless possible around 1000m through trees/buildings etc?

Hi, I would like to have my home network accessible while I was at college etc as their internet access is so slow its unusable. I'm around 700-1000m away, however there are houses and trees in the way. Is this possible? and with what equipment? I cannot get any further than around 150m away with extra gain antennas on the router and a standard wifi card in the laptop.

Any advice / products that are quite cheap but would sort the problem would be much appreciated.

The distance is certainly possible, however I think the power you would need to overcome all the interference would violate all kinds of transmitter laws

The last piece of equipment I used for point to point wireless had a 19 degree tolerance on it from straight line view, so absolute line of site isn't that essential, but certainly preferable
    Thanks

Is it possible to get hold of more powerfull equipment than the law permits? USA sourced equipment possibly?

Yes, but if you use it inside the RA's jurisdiction its a breach of the Communications Act. Not an advisable idea, especially when this is indexed by Google pretty quickly.

Of course my bull-bar is safe, it sits so high the old people and the children go underneath.

I have heard this is possible for upto 2 miles in some cases if you can find yourself a higher gain antenna for each end.

I need a integrated solution in the laptop if at all possible, don't really want to go round with a massive antenna or something

I've currently got a pcmcia card in the laptop, was thinking of getting a internal mini pci card with 2 antennas that fit inside of the laptop and sort of "snake" around underneath the keyboard hopefully giving me a better signal than a pcmcia card.

Maybe with a high gain, directional antenna mounted high up on my house / in the loft it would be possible?

Got a USR9106 router at the moment, anyone know of any firmware upgrades or similar to increase the transmitter power?

I think the idea here is to leave the power of the transmitter as it is and improve the dissipation. Take a look at a Yagi mounted on your roof (or chimney).

I would also think it would be better to have a directional antenna at the laptop end too. Find a pcmcia card with an external mini-jack and attach a mini antenna.

If cost is an issue, you could always go with the ol' pringles can trick (http://www.oreillynet.com/cs/weblog/...g/448?wlg=yes).

Just wondered if it was possible to get gain boosters for wifi like you can get for tv's etc for the receiving end? Still trying to make this happen but I think that I'll look a bit too silly / nerdy going around pointing a pringles tin at people!

Ive got a 8db gain antenna that isnt directional that I could use on the laptop, if I placed that into a pringles tube would it help?

Think one of these would be powerful enough?

    Paired with one of these

Also what about MIMO and other technologies?

    EDIT : http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/NETGEAR-WGM124...QQcmdZViewItem

Looks pretty cheap! If I linked that to my current router via ethernet or even over wlan do you think it could act as a repeater?

How did you get on with this? Did you manage to access your internet from that distance?

If it where me, i'd have given up and bought a Vodafone 3G data-card, signal permitting, for my laptop. Easier and probably cheaper.

    Hi,

In our experience using OzBridge's you cant go far wrong.

They do 5.8Ghz and 2.4Ghz models.

We have a 23km line of sight link in Taunton using this kit and it is rock solid. We use it to provide a 10mb wireless leased line.
