We can do exchange, but are exchange compatible alternatives accepted/encouraged?

400 exchange accounts is a dedicated server(s) / cluster.
Its not really. With a decent infrastructure (segregated hub/cas/store/web) infrastructure, we have many school's email accounts on one mailbox server. In fact one school per mailstore. I would guess there are 19-20k accounts on there.
It just needs to be properly thought out and managed...
