FreeBSD VPS

Hi all,

I'm interested in a UK-based VPS running FreeBSD (preferably version 7, and using proper virtualisation rather than jails). I've had a good hunt around but I haven't been able to find anything.

Does anyone provide this service?

Thanks,
Tim.

Tim, this is quite an unusual requirement and so I would imagine if you did find someone who offered it, the pricing might be such that you should consider a dedicated server instead.

Good luck with your hunt in any event.

Thanks for the reply Ed. Yes, I guessed it was unusual, but thought I'd ask around anyway.

If that fails I will consider a dedicated server (I already have one, in fact, but I'm considering future options). Or maybe even go Colo and get my own server.

Tim.

Maybe Goscomb can accommodate you on their Xen VPS/VDS setup?

Try SynergyWorks Internet - Windows Dedicated Servers, Linux Virtual Server, Server Colocation, Linux Vps, Windows Vps, UK

We got a quote from them last week for a customer who wanted a FreeBSD Virtual Machine.

What else do you need in terms of Disk, CPU and RAM (as guaranteed resources) ?

I haven't thought that through thoroughly yet (because I wasn't even sure there'd be any FreeBSD VPSs out there!). But I guess 50GB disk, 1GB RAM, and 2GHz CPU? I don't really know what the options are.

Hi Tim,

We can do this on our XenServer platform and have one customer who uses FreeBSD.

There is a caveat however - the disk performance is poor. As far as we can work out there are no XenServer compatible PV drivers for FreeBSD, which seems to mean the maximum we can get out of a virtual disk is about 8MB/sec, at least 5-7 times less than we get on a CentOS/RHEL VPS. We also only offer FreeBSD as unmanaged but I am guessing this is what you want anyway.

Packages here: network eq | Virtual Private Servers (VPS) - I am guessing you will be looking at our "Advanced VPS" so £65/month + VAT.

Gavin

Performance of BSD on a VPS is far less than that of other *nix variants due to lack of driver/kernel/module support - which tends to lead to disk i/o bottlenecks and highload

We've also noted that there are occasions the boot loader goes "off for a walk" on it's own, and there has to be some manual repair after a forced-reboot

There are always the dedicated server options, although BSD *can* be finicky about current/new hardware
