The problem with trying to work this out, is with an iPhone you'll end up using it a hell of a lot more than a normal phone, and as such, the battery life will suffer. I use my 3GS quite heavily and still get > 1 day battery life out of it. I have push email turned off though and just sync when I want to (not to a schedule) Other people at work moan about the battery life but they're all using push email/regular syncs.

14month old 3G with 1 push and 3 pull (at 15 min intervals) needs charging every day as its down to about 30%.
But then i do use the phone quite a bit.
Why would you pull-at-intervals ? Why not just pull when you actually want the email ?

Spot on. Also, I'd rather my mail headers were waiting for me straight away, regardless of my current signal, so I can see what's there and determine if there is anything which needs attention.

Ed-zactly (do you see what i did there)
I would have them all push if I could. I dont buy your argument your choosing to be disturbed by the sender. Sure my phone buzzes briefly, I know how to drive my phone so I have turned the sound off for emails, and that gives me a gentle nudge to say you have mail. i can then decide if i want to know what it is.
