Are you picking "exchange" for any specific feature, or do you just require POP/SMTP or IMAP/POP/SMTP ?

At the moment 3 accounts, about 1GB for each, and we need to be able to set aliases for other addresses, push is not a must have, but would be nice

Doesn't need to be exchange, but need IMAP/SMTP

Not to do us out of a sale, but if you don't require the collaborative and push email features of Exchange, then you will probably be better served by a standard IMAP/SMTP on our shared hosting.

Alternatively, we run managed Zimbra systems for a few customers (minimum requirement would be a VDS of some kind).

Yeh, the reason I would go with exchange is so I can get email pushed to my phone, but its not 100% must have, just looking around to see what's on offer

I believe Rackspace have developed their own mail platform which has push functionality. It's priced lower than exchange accounts.

you want the *sender* to decide when you get disturbed by an email, rather than at your convenience as *recipient* - nice

If you dont want the push email, we offer a range of competitively priced pop3 / imap / smtp email only packages at Email Hosting - you can "self quote" for different numbers of mailboxes and their sizes

We could do this with SmarterMail v6.

£40/Year for 3 email accounts with 1GB Disk Space each, SMTP/POP3/IMAP/Webmail etc.

Exchange ActiveSync can be added for £10/Year/Mailbox.

Rob was thinking along the same lines as me! From my limited exploration, push email seems to take an awful lot of extra resources to handle than straight POP/IMAP, for the small convenience of not having to go "retrieve new mail". I do struggle to see it being worthwhile to be honest.

If you use your mobile phone for email, I believe using push over regularly POPing or syncing an IMAP mailbox is much better for your battery life, from what I hear from regular users.

I do use email on my phone (win mobile - HTC TytnII), and have extensively used both push and pull methods and it's *much* worse on battery life with push (even with the ding/vibrate turned off) rather than making the few data connections when I chose to make them.

With "push" I was getting sub 24 hours out of a full charge - so had to recharge min once per day, with pull I can skip a day of charging and not notice - now this is not an issue when you're @ the office, because its charging all the time - but then when @ the office, I want to use my email on my desktop ...

IMHO It's all down to personal preference

Can anyone give a rough idea of battery life on an iPhone 3G, with push turned on?

My 3GS needs charging every 2-3 days with push on one accoun and pull every 15 mins in the other. It gets a bit if browsing an occasional playing of Worms as well though
