    Need Exchange Hosting

    Hi,

Filling up the pst file on Outlook 2002 (yet again), has made me realise that I really should sort out my email accounts...

Currently, I have 2 work email addresses managed by Outlook 2002 on my work laptop. On my home PC are 5 personal email addresses in Thunderbird, although only 2 (one is a yahoo account) are really used - I'm sure I can manage just forwarding on the other 3 to those 2. All are currently POP3. I reckon there must be about 4gb used there in total, although a good clean out should at least half that figure.

My next phone will hopefully run Android, and I'm considering getting a netbook too. Ideally, I'm looking for a solution that lets me access all 4 email addresses from all the devices.

I've seen MS Exchange offered for under £10 in several places, some also offer free copies of Outlook. However as soon as I look into support for multiple email addresses, the price seems to quadruple. I'm also not sure if Exchange works with Android, and whether I'd need to buy any extra software.

    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Gaz

Don't forget on many activesync devices you can only have one physical email account, although you can alias other addresses to it typically, but all your email will arrive to one account, unless you get jiggy with some rules to auto folder it.

You "might" be better with IMAP and a number of accounts perhaps.

In *general* any mail client will collect email from any mail server - operating system is irrelevant if either app if following the RFC's

Sounds like you need an IMAP email service and then can use your 'droid phone, thunderbird and outlook on the same service ...

How much email do you get per day and how much do you want to "store" serverside (vs POP3ing to your local machines) - i.e. how much of the historical mail do you ever need to access from the other devices ?

    Thanks for the suggestions.

First, I hadn't realised that many activesync devices only handled one email account. That could be an issue, as ideally I'd like access to all email account on my phone, and be able to reply with the correct email address.
Are there any phones that do handle multiple accounts?

I hadn't thought about imap. I suppose the synchronised calendar and contacts with exchange would be useful though.

I might get around 50 emails a day, but a lot of that is from mailing lists, and gets filtered off to folders for reading later.
Ideally I'd like access to all emails going back years, but if that's not possible on phones, then it's not a big issue.

Also, I've no special attachment to Thunderbird - I just tried it because it saved buying a new Outlook license. That's partly why the the free outlook on some deals was attractive

If you're activesync'ing a windows phone it does that out-of-the-box with your outlook, has nothing to do with the server (by default)

The bigger the IMAP folder the longer the phone will take keeping it's copy of the headers inline with the server-side copy - depends if you want to spend 2 minutes getting your email or 20

Orange phones come with a copy too, no idea about other suppliers.

Do you want to "mix" your work email and personal email on the same devices ?

A jailbroken iPhone with some modification can, but I would recommend against going that route. It can be a pain to set up, stop random things working and makes keeping up to date difficult.

You could always look at the open CalDAV and CardDAV standards. Don't know what mobile devices support these yet though.
I think the iPhone running OS v3.1 supports CalDAV but not CardDAV, so you only get contacts synced via iTunes with a cable and not over the air.

Thanks for all the advice. It's looking like this is all a lot more complicated than I realised.

It's probably best if I forget about trying to synchronise a phone with all of this just now, as it will probably be a few months before I get a new contract anyway.

Going back to Exchange, are there any hosts out there doing good deals for using 4 mailboxes?

True, but most clients let you set a retention and header get period so you don't have to scrape it all..

To be honest with Exchange so much of the money goes to Microsoft that you are going to pay pretty much n x mailbox price if you want n mailboxes until you get to at least n > 25.

We would be happy to quote you but if price is the key issue then at the moment we can't compete with Microsoft's own Exchange offering as our SPLA licensing costs alone are more than their sell price.

I thought about this, and realised of the 4 email addresses I use regularly:

    1. 1 is a yahoo address. As far as I can see, I can only use this account via pop3 unless I forwarded all emails to another address
    2. 1 work email address is part of a domain used by colleagues too. I presume they'd all need to use exchange which isn't currently an option
    3. The other work email is a possibility, however that account also has imap access which may work for now
    4. Likewise the other personal email account has imap access, which is more appropriate

So I'll give Exchange a miss for now, or at most just use a single mail box

    Thanks

Can you not get at all those via IMAP? I would be surprised if Yahoo don't allow it, but then again I could be wrong and Exchange does too, although corporate policy many not allow it again.

Nothing stopping you having 4 ISP IMAP accounts I guess and forwarding that which doesn't support it, or can't by policy to them. It does make replying to email a bit of a mess tho unless the sending server performs a header intact forward so it doesn't look like the email has come from that server, and still from the original sender.
