We are looking for prices for UK dedicated servers with the following hardware specs, please:

- Server 1: 2Ghz (or better) Celeron, 512Mb RAM, 2 x 40Gb IDE drives (not RAID), 3 IP addresses, 20Gb/month data transfer.

- Server 2: 2.4Ghz (or better) Pentium 4, 1Gb RAM, 2 x 80Gb drives (not RAID), 3 IP addresses, 100Gb/month data transfer.

Other required specs for both servers:

- Windows 2003 Standard Edition (SPLA licence suitable for commercial hosting, not a retail CALs licence).

- Remote reboot port.

- 24x7 support (access to your staff 24x7, and hardware support by your staff or fully capable datacentre staff 24x7).

We'd also prefer:

- Availability of shared SQL Server hosting, where we can rent space on a shared SQL Server machine.

- Availability of off-server backup (eg NAS) at reasonable rates.

- A provider with proper multi-homed connectivity.

Server management is not needed -- we'll look after OS updates etc.

Monthly pricing is preferred, 3 months is the maximum we'd contract to (monthly thereafter). If you can only offer annual contracts then very sorry but please don't quote.

Our interest is both for ourselves and for selling on to clients (we add our management services) and we are keen to establish a good long-term relationship with one main provider.

We can provide shared SQL for £10/month per database (50mb), and we also provide network storage space at £20/month for the first 10gb (including 2nd NIC) and £10/month thereafter. We offer 24/7 phone support with these servers. There is no minimum contract.

In the longer term, if you want to add more servers we can switch you over to our wholesale pricing, contact me off board for this.

We are properly multihomed - from Level3, Tiscali and Newnet. We've also got over 80 peering sessions set up. You can check up on us via our AS number, AS29131.

Chris - yes, they're SPLA.

Our prices are very competitive for a few reasons;

1) We standardise on hardware, and build all the machines in bulk. We're quite happy to do a custom spec machine, but this works out being considerably more expensive as we lose our economies of scale.
2) We have streamlined the dedicated server process; we save time (and hence save you money) by doing things like having imaged based network boot installs. It takes us a few minutes to install the OS on a server, not many hosts are in the same position as us for this.
3) We offer generous amounts of bandwidth because we maintain our own network, multihomed and peered. By peering we increase connectivity and reduce our bandwidth costs, and can pass this on to customers by offering more bandwidth.

I can completely understand where you're coming from - it seems too good to be true! Remember we don't tie you in with a contract, so it's a low risk option if you're sceptical.

Stephen: thanks, prices and specs look good, but I'm afraid we do need Win2k3 Standard not Web Edition, and the remote reboot port is a must too.

Stephen: thanks for the clarification, that looks good, and your infrastructure looks good too. Getting good pings (comparable to DCs in London) to your site hosting365.ie -- is that location where new dedi servers would be?

A question on VAT: for VAT-registered companies in UK etc, do you zero-rate (ie we give you our UK VAT number and you don't charge us VAT)? Irish VAT is a bit heavy at 21%!!

Yes, all servers go in that location, if you give us your VAT number we do not charge you any VAT.
