    1U Colocation in/near Edinburgh

    Dear All,

I will soon need to find a collocation site for a new 1U server.
I've used various companies around the UK in the past, but I'm now living in Edinburgh and am wondering if there is anywhere local that I should consider.
It's a simple reasonably low power and low bandwidth machine, looking for a no-frills 1U home. Any suggestions?

    Thanks, Phil.

Pulsant have the former edNET/Lumison data centre at Newbridge as well as the former ScoLocate site at South Gyle. There's also the former Onyx building in South Gyle (which was Telecity years ago).

We were in the BlueSquare data centre and after Lumison/Pulsant bought them the service went downhill considerably, so you might want to bear that in mind. That said, we left in 2012 so things have have got better since then. If not, you're a bit stuck for choice I'm afraid.

Pulsant may not want to deal with co-locating a single server, but if not then I'm sure they can point you in the direction of one of their customers who can help.

Not sure Pulsant would have much interest in single U hosting, but maybe try Extraordinary Managed Services Ltd - Hosting & Cloud Services UK ?

Agreed - Pulsant South Gyle is probably the most ideal site, but might carry a bit of a premium price wise. If it's pure low bandwidth single server colo and Pulsant is too pricey it may be worth considering if widening your area to include Glasgow ect might be acceptable.

Belated thanks for your helpful replies everyone!

I have contacted Pulsant and they can accommodate me at Newbridge, but their bandwidth pricing doesn't seem ideal for me. My total requirement is quite modest - I reckon I average only about 15 GB/month total traffic, but when I'm actually logged in and doing things I need it to be reasonably quick, i.e. 100 Mbit/s or preferably better. The deal that Pulsant are offering is 1 Mbit/s 95% - which is plenty for my average requirements - but capped at 10 Mbit/s at the switch. If I want to be able to burst at more than 10 Mbit/s I need to pay almost double.

What do you folks think? Is this a typical deal?

"connected" suggested that I should look for places in Glasgow - any recommendations?

    Thanks again, Phil.

95th percentile CDR is pretty rare for individual server co-lo these days, but then again Scotland isn't exactly the connectivity capital of the world...

You might have better luck talking to people who have rack space in Pulsant and are willing to resell some of it to you.

Thanks Ed. I did ask Pulsant if they would like to refer me to one of their customers, but they haven't done so. Steve Wright suggested Extraordinary; I did look at their website but was put off by the "latest news" being from 2015 and the lack of any prices. Perhaps I'll try them now.

    Other suggestions are welcome.

Steve used to work for Pulsant after they bought DediPower, so he'd know who are there and have a vague idea of what they can offer.

Apparently Extraordinary are no longer offering by-the-U co-lo in Edinburgh.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone - but it seems that I need more! Glasgow ideas anyone?

The guys at Melbourne/Iomart will do you 1U/0.5a/1TB on 100Mbps in Glasgow or maybe get in touch with the guys at fluency/commsworld for the 1u in South Gyle.
