Question Cheapest 1Gb/s transit + colo option in the UK

    Hi,

We currently have 5 cabinets in City Lifeline, but only use a total of 100Mb/s of bandwidth across those cabinets.

We're now in need of a 1Gb/s feed with either a half or full cabinet in another UK datacentre. This will complement a similar set-up that we'll have with HE.net in the US.

Who has the best deals on bandwidth in the UK at this level? Should we go direct to Level3 or are there other good deals to be had on 1Gb/s + Colo space in the UK?

    Thanks!

We've never had much luck negotiating bandwidth pricing with Level(3) in the UK - they are much more expensive than any other tier-1 and stubbornly refuse to budge. I know others with more buying power than us have also had similar experiences.

Cogent have a data centre in London, so if you don't mind buying everything from one place then you might get a good deal.

Otherwise, find somewhere with Telia on-net as I hear they are knocking out pretty good pricing these days.

Have a look at Telia / GTT, we have both in our BGP mix and price/quality is good.

How much power do you require with the half or full cab?

Definitely agree that the best place to go for this is going to depend on power and quality of bandwidth needed. If cogent bandwidth in a relatively 'low' spec datacentre (Mastmaker) is okay they will most likely be your cheapest option.

If you want a better datacentre and better bandwidth there are a number of places you could go. If you're not putting this into your own ASN I would actually consider /not/ going direct with a tier1 provider. Best quality would probably be achieved with a decent tier 2 ISP who has a mix of Tier 1 ISPs + Peering in a decent Tier 3 London DC. I would expect to spend about 1000 pcm for a 2KW rack and a flat rate 1Gbit port from a reasonable Tier 2 ISP.

Are you interconnecting the sites ?
BGP feed and your own ASN/IPs ?

I've not asked them for 1GB/s level pricing on transit for a long while - if looking to add L3 to your mix, plan for $10/MB and you'll possibly get a little change, ISTR they're also still charging "port fees" although have waived them in the past if you supplied the branded GBICs

First question I'd ask is what is it for ?

Smells like some kind of off site backup, it maybe cheaper to buy a p2p 1Gb between City life line and your new DC provider?

Where are you, does location matter?

    Anything else we should know?

Level3 Transit can be had for reasonable pricing; yes, not going to be $0.3/Mbps, but with a 1Gbps CDR I'd expect to be in the $1-1.5/Mbps range based on experience.

As others have said if you don't mind need premium transit/have any issues using Cogent then I suspect they will be the cheapest at the moment in Mastmaker. Other than that for a budget solution you will probably be best outside of London with a Tier 2.

Whilst you can probably get Level 3 down to a reasonable price as Steve says if you want a lead time under a few months they probably wouldn't be the right choice!

Absolutely, OP if you're comfortable with cogent BW/DC I would try and target about 600/pcm for a 8a half rack and 1G full with them. It might be slightly more depending on the position of the moon but I'd give that a go.

If you want to buy from a Tier 2 instead who has a mix of tier 1 + peering then I would expect to pay ~900+ PCM.
