    small .asp site hosting req'd

    Hi,

I need a small amount of .asp webspace, to host our off-network status site. Needs an access database (connectionless) and also needs to be reliable

I'm sure someone can provide for this very simple request?

    Many thanks
    Dan

    Thanks Chris,

does that one allow me to upload an .mdb, make it writable and then access it from an asp page (dsn-less)? Your site doesn't seem to mention that, i might have missed it though.

Yeah - they managed to print the wrong ad for us in .net this month, will probably mean we get it free though!

oh sorry i forgot to ask/mention, you need to not be using any ISPs that we are, and preferably not in the same datacentre (sorry my request is getting complicated now). If you let me know an IP of one of the servers it's likely to be hosted on I can check it out, last thing i want is an off-network status site that's in the same datacentre!

    yes - absolutely

Our primary upstream is Level3 - from what I can see, I dont think you use them as a provider?

We're in Redbus Mer in London - You're in one of the IFLs in Manchester arent you?

You will probably be hosted on either 82.138.243.49 or 82.138.243.61

    Thanks for the quick response

I think both our providers use level3 at some point, but both peer extensively in the UK so it shouldnt be an issue - i think it would be hard to find someone that doesn't use Level3 at some point in their network.

Yes, we're in IFL1 & IFL2. I gathered you had some stuff in IFL1 at one point, hence me asking the question about location.

    Cheers

I've used a lot of US providers in the past few years and IMHO that's not the best site for a critical portion of your web presence Dan if you value reliability.

There is an implication there that just because our servers are iin the US, that we are less reliable than anyone with servers physically located in the UK.
I don't think that is fair to say, and seems to be a sweeping generalisation anyway.
I have dealt with dodgy UK providers in the past but I would not say that generally they are unreliable.

NB: This is not intended to fuel a flame war, I just don't like the implication.
Visit our forums and ask any client if they are happy with our service and reliability, or check out our uptime stats page....

I have to agree with this, although I have no direct experience of The Planet. We have servers in the US at EV1 in Texas, as well as UK in Globalswitch London. Our US shared servers run very well and we've had no problems with them at all. Clients are all happy with the reliablity and service.

Please don't get me wrong ... I don't have any problem at all with hosting sites in the US (all my servers are in the US currently). My comment was regarding the The Planet which, from what I've experienced first hand, and heard from others, is not of enough quality to host anything that I would consider important to my business.

When you talk about theplanet, do you mean their servers or their network or both?
I have certainly heard variable reports about some of the companies that sell servers in the planet datacenters (eg layered) but they bring their own hardware to the party so that does not reflect on theplanet themselves.
TP are the fifth US DC I have had dealings with and, IME, have been the most reliable/stable to date (though granted they had one very bad day a few months back).

I looked long and hard to find them and pretty much found that every DC had it's detracters and it's fans - ultimately, it doesn't matter what anyone else says - if you have a really bad experience with a DC then all the glowing reports mean jack diddly.
Equally, DC's with "poor" reps will usually have their own legion of fans who have never had any trouble....

Which DC do you use out of interest?
