Thread: Cheap 1u Needed.

  1. #1

    Question Cheap 1u Needed.

    Hi there.

Just a quick question. Im currently looking into colocation of 2x1u web/email servers and am looking at a small 1u server to act as a linux-based firewall (ipchains-based to be specific).

Obviously im not needing anything too powerfull, the current (test) setup i have based around a non-rackmount 1u firewall has a pII-200 128mb EDO and a 2gb SCSI, so anything from that upwards would be suitable (tested server under full load and no latency/dropped packets). only real requirement would be that there is 2x intel-based NIC's installed.

Ive done google searches and looked on ebay (obviously im looking for a second hand server preferably due to costs) but have had no luck as of yet.

    Budget upto around £100+vat.

Any idea of where i could source one, or does anyone have any old hardware knocking around lol =)

    Thanks for now,

    Stephen

That's the issue really, you're adding a single point of failure to your network by putting both machines behind a single firewall. If that firewall is an ancient, home brew, 1u server.... I guess it depends how critical your project is. I'd be tempted to up the budget and grab something like a PIX 501 or see if your co-lo provider can put you behind one of their larger firewall boxes for an additional monthly fee.

If you are looking for low spec 1u servers, I believe Othello still has some old boxes cluttering up their suite. Might be worth giving them a shout.

got a contact number for othello? or a website?

As for the reliability, i know this can be an issue. Hence why im looking for something thats proven reliable, and obviously i will put it through its paces before thinking of putting it out. As for the PIX 501's, anyone using these at the moment want to share any thoughts/feelings about them?

and i like the look of a net4501/4801, that may be a worthwhile purchase (may be able to push the budget a little lol) also lol @ my postcount - is it me or is it still 0?

Posts inside the requests/offers forums do not increase your postcount.

Another person you might want to touch base with is 'Hamlesh' on this forum who has recently started offering old machines as basic dedicated servers.

PIX 501 is fine for low throughput applications. It's a little inflexible and you may find the interface unwieldy if you're not used to Cisco.

One of our customers is a big fan of the Firebrick however they did have an issue about a week ago where the firebrick randomly loaded some kind of failsafe config, blocking all but a handful of ports to the servers behind it. Doesn't exactly fill you with confidence .

I still maintain the best solution might be to talk to your co-lo provider and see what they can offer in terms of a shared firewall solution. That way you get to save money, you have the added reliability of a high end firewall with failover and you don't have to worry about managing it.

i belive the pix isnt standard IOS though? so even with a little cisco knowledge its going to be a little sketchy isnt it?

Firebrick I shall look into =)

As for the co-lo based firewall im a bit concered about that. I am predicting i am going to be needing quite a specific setup as i was looking to setup a VPN link between our offices and the servers. Reason? I dont fancy poking through another 4-6 ports for a combination of VNC/SSH/WEBMIN access (different levels of expertise need to access the server for generic maininance). Now i know the pix is VPN capable, but again its all cisco-specific OS so to speak, and is probably only going to like talking to another PIX (and not the netgear FVS328 im lumped with here), or even the other way round. With a IPCOP/SMOOTHWALL-based firewall config i could tie it up directly with our IPCOP box sat here for a nice easy VPN link. would make admin a doddle =)

So im not convinced on anything at the moment. Getting a bit worried, need to go live in two months =( never enough time.

    Thanks again

    Stephen
