SCO Unix Help Needed (VisionFS/Samba)

Hi All,

Got a client who is using an SCO Openswerver box to run their EPOS and stock ordering system. The software is 3ex, and supports exporting to Excel, *but* you need to be able to map a windows share (they all run Windows desktops). The machine has VisionFS installed on it, but we can't authenticate with it, and frankly we'd rather have something that we can lookup the problems a bit easier on there like Samba.

Sadly, my mad skillz aren't quite up to performing this task, not on a system that they use all day every day and if it goes down for even a minute they panic! I can provide telnet access and RDP to a windows PC for you to test your work via.

Can anyone provide me with a quote for this work? Basically to remove VisionFS and replace it with Samba and test as appropriate. If you're local to Cardiff that's a bonus

Ta!

Have you tried attacking it the other way around and used something like NFSAxe?

No, I haven't, but they move desks a lot, and it'll be simpler to have one drive mapped on each machine to a known point on the sco box Thanks for the idea, i guess it's one to try if we're totally buggered.

Ok, if it's just an export how about apache or ftp? There's a SCO box up the road that runs samba. We didn't set it up but could have a rummage if you get really stuck.

...or slap another linux box in there with samba on it and use nfs to get the data. They could use that box as "Backup" as well...

3ex supposedly does not run on Linux Some people have tried, and got it almost working but not all the way i'm told.
A second box I suppose would almost solve the problem, i'd have to work out how the NFS worked then mind you, which odds are is broken also The machine's about 5-6 years old, and no-one there understands it other than the tasks they've done themselves, and as a Windows person with limited *nix experience it seems to fall to me to fix things!

Similar boat with the box up the road - it's one of those "Last Touch" sort-of sites if things go wrong
Give samba a crack - won't hurt and it's not a scary as you may think. Not really the sort of thing you can quote for on a box of dubious origins, other than an hourly rate with no guarantee of success!

It's not the installation of Samba that frightens me, it's removing VisionFS which is SCO's bastardised version...
