Not sure of next step - VPS or Dedicated or Reseller

I'm floundering a bit and looking for some guidance.

I have two cheap reseller packages - a splashhost deal (now voxtreme?) and a VPScolo package.

the VPScolo package was supposed to be UK based but it was suddenly switched to US datacenters.

the Splashhost package has been moved this week to a new server and caused me no end of headaches. (nds and mail issues and lost MySQL users)

so I'm looking for my next step.

I'm a web developer and bought the reseller packages as they seemed a cheap way of hosting multiple domains - I have around 40 domains hosted, some are project sites rather than clients and only a couple are busy sites, the busiest of which is using around 10gb per month.

no adult sites, mostly brochureware with one or two mailing lists, a fair number of CMS and some subdomains

I need PHP/MySQL and I'd like to be in the position to install Ht:dig for development purposes (one of my applications uses it for search)

I've got used to Cpanel and WebHostManager for setting up sites and email and one or two of the clients use cpanels webmail tools. (not essential though, I could learn a new way and move the cpanel users onto shared)

At some point I think a dedicated server is the solution, although income from hosting client sites isn't enough to warrant it now.

My question is this:

Some part of me says I should get UK based hosting - is that essential do you think?

would it be best to get a UK based VPS and move all the domains onto it?

or get a UK based reseller package for some of the sites and a VPS for development.

or get a low cost dedicated server that I can upgrade as time progresses?

or something else?

(split domains onto shared/reseller/VPS servers perhaps.)

suggestions please.

What would you do?

Thanks

Tony

If you are hosting UK sites, UK hosting is a must for speed and search engine placement. There is no real reason to host a UK site in the US - there are plenty of quality providers to choose from this side of the pond!

Whether you want a VDS/Dedi or Shared hosting really depends on whether you want to sacrifice flexibility/configurability for ease of use (shared hosting) or whether you need root access to install your own applications, edit your php.ini, etc and are willing to put up with the extra hassle of managing your own Linux server.

Options we can offer:

cPanel reseller account. 10GB diskspace, 100GB monthly data transfer. This is an 'assigned only' package. Essentially you divide your resources between your 'client' sites. This differs from the standard 2host multidomain packages with which you only pay for what you use but at higher cost. Reseller accounts are hosted on Dual Opteron servers with hardware RAID - top of the line Supermicro hardware. £29.99/month exc. VAT or £299.99/year. Free setup.

Virtual dedicated server. 20GB diskspace, 200GB monthly data transfer. cPanel/WHM, unlimited domains, unlimited resources to assign so long as your VDS can cope. Customer managed. CentOS Linux. £29.99/month exc. VAT or £299.99/year. Free setup.

Dedicated server. From £99.99/month.

Email: adam.smith@2host.co.uk for further details/ordering on any of the above options or to discuss your requirements further.

Good luck with whatever you choose .
