    Local Hosting - Benefits

    Hi all,

This is my first post, so please take it easy on me

I'm based in the UK, but my website is currently hosted in the USA.

What benefits, if any, would I see from hosting locally/in the UK?

    Any advice welcome

Hi welcome to the forum Black20VT.

The advantages of hosting in the USA are generally based on cost. Bandwidth and hosting space is generally cheaper across the pond. The disadvantage for a UK customer is latency. If waiting for an extra few seconds until your site loads is not a problem then USA hosting is for you. I also find that downloading large files from the USA host can result in a slower download speed than hosted here in the UK. I hope this helps.

It's not where YOU are located that matters, it's where the majority of your website's visitors are located you need to consider. In many cases, there's very little noticeable difference in speed between US and UK hosting.

Well, my target audience is certainly UK based, so this is why I'm thinking of moving my hosting to the UK. There's just so many providers out there, it's just taking the plunge really.

    I 'think' I've a shortlist of:

    Tsohost
    Transnexis
    Clook
    Vidahost

Any thoughts/comments from anyone on those hosts?

Tsohost is a good provider, we use them for some hosting of an offsite solution, Adam is a great guy.

Its based on the IP of the server on which the site is hosted, because IPs are allocated to regions etc. rankings can tell where the server is based.

    It's a '.uk.com' domain, so I don't know how that'll effect things?

But technically uk.com's are just subdomains aren't they.

I'm sure the clever bods in the search engine world have their systems configured, but uk.com isn't a gTLD as such, it's just the domain uk.com which CentralNIC own, and then sell subdomains of that.

Just to disprove the theory that having your sites over many IP addresses makes you rank higher in Google, they confirmed that this is not true.

So next time you have a client requesting more IP's because of SEO, refer them to the following link:
