I used them once years ago. In one case, their bandwidth monitor that was supposed to email us anything over £20 of usage didn't work and it cost us just over £800 in bandwidth.
Steer clear, there's no excuse to use 1&1, especially if you've got a far as to find a forum like this.

We had exactly the same issue but with £2,300. Got it down to half (£1,100) but they refused to accept their own monitor was broken despite me sending them plenty of screenshots.
I'd avoid them at all costs.
