If I'm a search engine, I see lots of extraneous HTML markup and little content. I miss most content because it's actually images, not text. Apart from the page title and meta tags, this is all I have to eat:

I'm a poor poor search engine - please at least take the text out of the images so I can feed
SEs only index text, so you want lots of text. Putting text in images also increases loading times and makes the site inaccessible
People will also tell you not to use tables-based layouts as they're old-school and that's definitely true because if you semnatically markup your headers then SEs know what's important and so on. However, firstly, content is king
