Dell SC1430

Hey,

Anyone used the Dell SC1430? I'm looking at buying one as a replacement for my pc. I know it is a server but would like something of a high specification and pre built for the warranty etc.

Compared to a HP Workstation the SC1430 seems pretty cheap.

I assume that I could buy the system with a cheaper 80gig drive and pop in my 500gig sata disk?

Cheers,

Jon

Have you thought about one of the higher end Dell workstation machines?

I have looked at the higher end PC's. I could build a much better system (excluding graphics, but I am not a gamer) with the SC1430 than I could with the higher end PC's for comparative cost. Not sure why, unless I'm overlooking something.

The High end HP systems seem very expensive for that they are.

IMO you are better off with the standard desktops such as C521/E520.

Check the prices for Home users and then Small Business as often there are big savings between the two despite the same spec. It's not often that SB is cheaper either - sometimes it's the other way.

You have to check daily with Dell because their prices can change daily. I think it's to do with their stock levels. If they didn't shift X boxes of Y system last week then this week they offer free shipping and double ram etc.

Forget long term / onsite warranty. To keep costs down just take a gamble and go for the 90 day warranty.

If it's DOA it goes back, if it works straight away you should be fine. Any future problems would be cheap and easy to repair yourself.

Note that even though dell give you 90 days warranty you still have the manufacturers 1/3 year warranty for the CPU, memory, disk etc. Although I don't know how that would work with a prebuilt PC.

BTW, as the 1430 is a server tower what are the fans like? The C521 is whisper quiet, but at a guess the 1430 will have extra / larger / louder fans?

Try this:

http://www1.euro.dell.com/content/to...ck=tickerpromo

A really cheap model / reasonable specs is this one:

Try sourcing the parts yourself and getting the total to less than £339. It can't be done!

That was a concern of mine. Although various reviews have stated that it isn't as noisey as most servers. I'm sure it is louder than the average pc though.

But they were there, this morning, as soon as I clicked 'Post Reply'.

I can only assume a mod thought I was posting a dell affiliate link.

I was not. I had just visited the dell home page and drilled down like with the adamsmith post.

?

Don't forget server rooms are not designed as work areas so noise isn't an issue. Personally I wouldn't want to work next to a server all day!

Your right it wouldn't be nice to work next to a server all day.

I've purchased a HP Pavilion A6085
