Hmmm at Crucial prices, 24 gig in a R300 is quite tempting at about 1.1k, probably not at Dell's current price though

How much impact on power usage does memory have? Anyone hazard a guess at what a bog standard R300 with 2gig would use compared to 24gig?

Going to go see if the Dell power calculator's been updated....

Edit: Woo, it has. So 24gb will be about 1.02amps, 2gb would be 0.77, not too bad. Do Fully Buffered dimms use a lot more power than standard ECC ones? As the Dell planner only gives FBDs as an option.

FB Dimms certainly generate a lot more heat than ECC which would imply they use more power.

If its going in a rackmount case and your buying FB's get the ballistix brand, the other stuff dies on too regular a frequency.

I guess it was a Friday-afternoon job, the online calc doesn't let you havw 2*500gb drives etc

I'm sure all you fan-boys have already ordered hundreds, but once you upgrade the case to allow hotswap drives, add some decent sized disks, increase the ram , and pick one of the cpu's without a butchered cache, they come in 50-quid more than we pay for a higher spec s/micro - a first for Dell

I personally don't see the benefit of the R300.. it sits in the middle of the 1950 and 860 where a server wasn't actually needed

And I'd like to see a supermicro engineer onsite witin 4 hours

For me... its full your boots time with the r200 at these prices, I havent even looked at the r300!

I can't quite remember where, but someone suggested it was going EoL - and yes,this surprised me as well. It may even have been the Dell rep I was speaking with who said it, not quite sure.

I am sure that I was told this however, and I'm glad that it's not, as our pricing on the R200's is pretty spectacular right now
