From memory Dell do a few versions, they generally show things like shipping date, spec,...

I can see how they could be useful, however we use our own asset tag system. It really depends what inforamtion you want on the tag.

Asset tags are optional to purchase from Dell, their not embedded or anything are they?

There just stickers. You can peel them off.

Proper "Asset Tags" are far more than just stickers, and not easily removed, and will leave a trace even when they are forced off.

Some insurers recommend/require them when kit is placed outside of your own premises - for example at a colocation centre or used in serviced offices.

We've been ordering Dell servers for a few years now, however when they introduced their asset tagging fairly recently I was initially interested, until we had the first few servers through with them that were nothing more than a cheap sticker stuck on them that is easily removable. Nothing to do with security at all and a waste of a fiver per server if you ask me.

You legally have to do asset tagging, otherwise there is no way you can confirm your balance sheet - which is one of your responsibilities as a director.

Asset Tagging and keeping of an Asset Register are not the same thing
although a well maintained AR would tag and identify everything ...
