Cheap Web Hosting Experiment

I've decided to start a little web hosting experiment and was wondering if anybody here fancies helping out - if you can spare some of your Internet connection's bandwidth that is.

First host - Loads of adverts on eBay from the same person selling, you've laugh I know you will:

Webspace: 3000GB
Bandwidth: 100GB
Domains Hosted: 25

For a whooping.... wait for it, 48p a month.

Now I'm going to take them up on that brilliant offer, I mean it's a fantastic deal isn't it and I'm going to take them up on that bandwidth too and this is where you come in.

If I upload a Linux ISO, other Open Source software and some large non-copyrighted (infact I own the copyright - since I took the pictures ) photos. Would any of you be willing to download stuff to see how long it takes before the account is suspended.

We could even run a competition, maybe one of you respectable web hosting companies could donate a free hosting package too the winner.

Who ever places a guess to the nearest GB (bandwidth) before the account is pulled is the winner.

Come on it's a laugh and I'm sure you could all do with one.

I can't believe that these little kids buy a cheap reseller account from a reseller of a reseller and then offer packages that cheap.

I bet your all panicking ain't you, with competition like that

Here the link to the test files
http://www.games-forum.co.uk/

Current Cheap Host We've Testing Is: digitalcityhosting

As far as the owner of this web host knows I'm just hosting a very basic simple website with links to some of my photos and a few music recordings of a family member's band. WHICH just happens to receive a lot of visitors

I'm not going to spam the server or install rapidleech/rapidkill to download large files 24/7 from remote servers. Just plain simple everyday hits. If they can't handle that then they should offer stupidly high bandwidth limits for silly amounts of money.

Now get downloading folks.

Current Bandwidth: 100210.93 MB / 100000 MB

Bids:

monaghan - 5GB
midnightsoftwar -7GB
JSamuel - 10GB
Cyberprog - 40GB

Reply with your BID and the winner will recieve one of those Unlimited hard drives

Regards,
Nick.

Post the URL for the download and I'm sure you'll get lots of help

I'll put the 1st bid at 5Gb before suspension.

Once you're suspended you could file a dispute with ebay and get your 48p back

Hmm, i'll go for 7Gb - before they realise. Don't forget they won't keep tabs on this stuff - i reckon it'll take them a while.

Of course if we all contribute, then it could be even higher before they realise!

Lets give these people a large b/w bill

I'd guess 10GB or even more.
It's most likely heavily oversold, however, unless they get notified when they hit thresholds, or monitor intensely, they won't notice it.

It won't be a few KB/s.
10GB will be quite quick to rack up.

I bet you'll either see piss poor performance or kicked after 10 gig of bandwidth is used.

Either way, post a link .

Based on what I've seen of some "hosts" claims, 48p sounds expensive for only 100Gb of transfer.
I doubt you'll get kicked as their supplier will have enough people who only use 1Gb/month that they'll probably not notice you ue al 100Gb of yours

So post that link

I would imagine it is more likely the diskspae usage that they would notice before the bandwidth usage.

See if you can fill all that space.

I would if I had decent upload bandwidth, just 25KB/sec at the moment - I could always create a public ftp account and then people can upload their own stuff - as long as it's completely legal content, don't want to give them any reason to suspend the account.

At the moment i'm pretty impressed with the speed of the downloads from them. Using FlashGet I max my connection out with 790KB/sec.

your right, give me a few minutes.

Edit: I don't think I'm allowed to post the details because my post has just got deleted.
