It can be done though with decent firewalling, although people don't request it very often for performance reasons. For example, we require the IPs of the users that connect using Ent Manager plus the IPs of any machines that will be connecting.

Hi Mark
Thats how we have it setup on our web server with Rackspace.
The firewall has rules setup to only allow certain IP addresses through (the office IP).
The database hosting is for a client and although I would recommend rackspace, it would be way to costly.
Could you offer just database hosting Mark? If so can you let me know what options are available and how much it will cost.
Thank you

Works quite well, as long as they don't have a dynamic IP

I think you have to post a request in the Requests section before anyone can reply with quotes / email addresses etc....

I beg to differ, infact it's trivially easy to set it up safely and securely IMHO.

Hi
do you plan to host your website with another host or locally and looking to host the db with another host?
you could ask a hosting company to allow your IP to connect to the SQL service.

I can't see any reason for having it "open"... why would anyone want to?

We have always had our mssql open for remote connections, helps with people using Visual Studio etc but it does have the problem of idiots trying to brute force which they have 0 chance in getting through. If your MSSQL box is secured correctly there really isn’t an issue.
I put a suggestion to MS for adding a filter, so many invalid login's = block they said they would sort something out but i don’t believe it will be in MSSQL until 2008 version is out
