This is a query for a good friend of mine and I would like some additional input. He called me this morning that he signed up with fasthosts to host a website for his business. Now what the fool did was he didn't read the package specification correctly and to get a database he has to pay £25/£50 ex vat for a database.
I'm not geared up on hosting companies hence why I am posting here but my hosting company gives me a number of mysql databases for free. I had a quick look at Register1 and they seem to offer free databases.
My hosting is up in the next month or so and I thought about jumping ship and several people even recommended fasthosts to me due to how much they offer for the price and their spped but that seems not so true when you have to shell out for a database.
Is fasthosts offering something better to justify the fee for a database and are they really that good from what some people have recently told me?
I looked at fasthosts myself an hour ago and I don't seem to see the attraction so I wonder if my friend could get a refund and move on to register1 etc using this 30-day money back guarantee.
If he does plan to do this, how does he transfer his new domain to this new hosting company. Anyhow, I'll go and speak to him about what his plans are and slap him on the head for not reading the whole print.

I think its a bit strange that they are going to charge for a database unless its some sort of premium sql hosting. I think your friend will be better moving onto another host.
In answer to your question about how he moves his domain to another host, the new host should provide all the relevant nameserver information and how to point his domain at there servers.

Yeah, sounds like he's looking at some sort of SQL Server database, which tend to be pricey. Lots of hosts offer free mySQL databases which may be better for his needs, or if it's a windows server he could use an access database.

Hi there,
I can sure as heck say don't touch Fasthosts - before starting my own company, I worked on their "Front Line Support Desk" and by god was that an experience.
Heres an example, down stairs was the shared data centre - a few UPS's caught alight, everyone evacuated and fire brigade came out, we then got back to our desks and was told "say anything you like - just dont say fire"
They are very over priced and their 50 strong front line support is good but it all depends on who you get...
Personally and this is personally speaking. I wouldnt touch them with a barge poll - find a small uk web host or just one better than Fasthosts - if you are thinking of leaving and are still in contract - Speak to the Retentions department and they can release the contract!
Did they alert you in any way before they took the late payment fee from you?

Well, Late Payment fees should count as a penalty charge and are thus unenforceable under contract law. Similar to the bank charges case currently running through the courts.

Fasthosts dont say nothing about the late payment charge - if you rang up and paid over the phone, the agent should of told you about it! Anywho, you where lucky to get a refund, they have a strict No Refunds Policy on everything!
Can you give more details regarding the bad experience you faced?
Its in the original post above... and a quick google for any slating / slagging word and fasthosts will give any number of examples... There are forums dedicated to the case..
About 10 years ago FastHosts were relatively cheap
However, they then started to go through reliability problems, much the same as any webhost that expands faster than they can cope without suspending new customer applications
At that point, in about 2002, I gave in with them, and moved all my customers off their servers
It does appear that they can cope more now, but their prices are amongst the high in the UK now (assuming you have more than a "basic" website)
If they have a No-refunds policy what do they do if someone requests a refund within the first 7 days of purchasing? They are legally obliged to under DSR...
