Add on domains, Virtual Domains??

Hi,

Can someone tell me if there is a difference between add-on domains and virtual domains or are they the same thing?

I am asking because I am looking for a new host and I want to be able to host multiple domains. My previous host allowed me to use add-on domains but I ran into some problems with the search engines because the add-on domains were actually sub-folders of my primary domain and I ended getting a lot of duplicate content problems.

I want to be able to host multiple domains but not as sub-folders of my primary domain. I also want the option of using different ip addresses with each domain. What package should i be looking for?

Thanks in advance

I think in that case you'll probably be looking for a reseller package - where each domain can be setup on its own individual hosting account.

Although I wasn't aware that having www.abc.com hosted at www.xyz.com/abc was an issue - www.xyz.com/abc shouldn't be spidered or linked to anywhere (unless you do so yourself) so how does google find out?

Google finds out everything...eventually!

I do have another hosting account which uses the plesk control panel for Linux and as far as I am aware, if I set up an extra domain on this account it will not be located or accessible as a sub folder. I just dont want to use this account as I dont want my 'money' sites on the same server.

Can anyone confirm this?...cheers again

Plesk has the concept of a domain "alias" which means the same pages get served for either domain name but it can't do add-on domains like cPanel with their own sub-domain/folder.

Plesks method for handling additional domain is by implementing every user as a "mini-reseller" - so to acheive what you want you will either want your choice of ...

# an account with a supplier using plesk, where if you are allowed "multiple domain" you are effectively a reseller

# a reseller account with someone using cpanel so each domain has its own instance of cpanel

# an account with a hsphere based host who can let you use/buy separate space for each domain but managed in the same control panel - the ease of a single account, without the "reseller" requirement/features you dont need

# multiple hosting one per domain - you can then spread them across several servers (host dependant) for some potentially additioanl reliability

add-on domain :
Using sub-directories to show a website or multiple websites
www.siteA.com
www.siteB.siteA.com
www.siteA.com/siteB

virtual domain :
Supporting multiple domains on one single server

The difference is the first one is structure, the second is architecture

Thanks very much for the replies, especially for the virtual domain definition.

I think I may have found a package to suit my needs....the VDS package offered by register1.net which offers 'Extra Virtual Domains'.

If anyone has other suggestions for hosting with this requirement I would appreciate it.

Thanks again for your replies.

Well I think that would work (register1's offering) or any decent cPanel reseller account.

My 2 cents.
