What is the difference between Linux and Windows hosting?

Hello guys could you please explain the main differences between these two hosting types? What websites it is better to host on linux-based servers and what on windows ones? Thanks in advance!

It's quite simple. If you need ASP or .NET then you need Windows hosting. If you need PHP then you will probably want Linux hosting.

Neither are better but there tend to be a lot more Linux hosts out there.

You'll also need Windows hosting if you need:

- SQL Server databases
- Windows CGI exes
- ISAPI DLLs

Windows will happily do PHP and Perl and MySQL also.

Yeah Windows will do PHP but are you serious? Is anyone actually using Windows in a commercial environment to host their PHP pages. I've tried it some years ago and nothing would work out the box so rather pointless really.

Fast-CGI on Windows has never given me a problem running any PHP scripts.

Having said that a well optimised linux machine will run PHP faster.

PHP works absolutely fine on Windows for us, never had any issues with stuff not working. The ISAPI version is good. I can't detect any difference in speed between PHP running on Windows or Linux boxes; we run both so no axe to grind.

pretty much what they said

If you need .net, classic asp, ms-sql, or are remotely running a remote windoze application (like ACT! Activator) then you want win2k3 or 2in2k8 hotsing

Other than that unix/linux.
