hi i currently have an account with hostgator for my reseller hosting,

Without the root password, the cPanel account transfer script cannot move all of your accounts/packages automatically. Instead, you'll have to give it the username/password/ip of each individual account. Often this process fails and you have to do it manually.
The other alternative is to download the cPanel backups from each individual account on your reseller and restore them on your dedi.

Hi,
I'm sorry if this is a bit off-topic, but as far as I know HostGator provides dedicated servers as well.
Is there any specific reason you're looking to move elsewhere?
Regards,
Jaime

I see, thanks for your reply.
By the way, do you know server administration? Because going to a dedicated server is a totally different game, specially when coming from a reseller account.
I just add that extra comment, since you say they're *expensive*, but you might want to take into account that management services are not cheap sometimes.

Jaime

Well... having a control panel and knowing how to properly secure and manage a server are two different things.
A control panel makes your day-to-day operations easier, but a control panel is not a replacement of a system administrator.
Think twice before getting a server without knowing what you're getting into, or hire a sys admin or a server management services provider. You can find them from $30-$150 to several hundreds a month... or get a fully managed server.
Regards,
Jaime

Have you thought about a VPS solution rather than dedicated?
We used to have a Hostgator reseller account and moved to VPs which is cheaper then dedicated yet still gives you a larger degree of control over your setup.
It also depends how much you want to spend as we stayed away from dedicated due to the high costs, plus with VPS you can always add another account and administer 1 or more services through something like ClientExec or AutoPilot.

I too will recommend you going with a VPS and as your client base grows, you can then go for a dedicated server.
But you need to keep in mind that with your decision of going with a VPS or a dedicated server, you will have to take care or the server end issues which are normally not faced, when you have a reseller account of any company.

I'd advise you to go for a managed dedicated server. Not a monster machine but one you can hang around on for a good number of months at least while your client base grows. In addition, you can sell your own reseller accounts yourself, but only do so after getting familiar with the ropes.

I just did this for 30 accounts with very, very few problems - and the problems which happened were mostly expected

Unsure if im blessed with luck or otherwise....
We did 2x cPanel migrations last year from decomissioned cPanel boxes to brand new servers (some 500 accounts), and we didnt suffer a single problem.
Likewise, when we did our mass-ensim -> cPanel migration in 2004ish, we shifted 250 clients off the old box and the cpanel server had no issues what so-ever. however it did cripple the ensim server

We've done plenty of cPanel migrations and have *very* few issues with most.
Matching up custom php settings between servers, and SSL certificate/fixed IP migrations are the only real times you cant simply rely on the inbuilt whm tool

Yes, it is, but if you like to transfer all accounts via WHM, you need root access to transfer it both of servers. If not, you can just generate backup from remote cpanel and put them like under /home/* and go to WHM and you can find option restoring cpanel backup file, it will restore accounts.
Thanks
