The thing is it could be fairly decent or completely unreliable a la InternetSeer.com. I'm suspecting it'll be poor as it's a free service .... do any of you use any external monitoring services? Which ones?
www.alertra.com seems like the most professional option....

i used easy monitor a while back - it was great for a free service and would recommend it to my clients.
they have just launched the new paying service too - ill check that out and give you some feedback
Currently testing this out and must say as far as freebies go its ok, but prefer something better.
If you want 24/7/365 support and friendly reliable service then look no further.

Hi,
We're setting up a site monitor which will be free although supported by ads. There can't be a better place to advertise a host, then on an email saying that the persons current hosts server is down!
It's being launched under a new hosting directory, it's basically impartial as our company's main market is development rather then hosting.
If any host out there has their own datacentre or doesn't mind a few hundred GB's more of bandwidth each month, please contact us.
We've got one server that can handle it already, although it would be nice to monitor sites from servers around the world.

I doubt very many hosts will support a project (ie, link to it) that could potentially cause them to lose clients.

Hi Andrew,
It wouldn't be the hosts choice, website owners would submit their site URL's.I doubt very many hosts will support a project (ie, link to it) that could potentially cause them to lose clients.

We were looking at Alertra but decided against it because of the costs involved.
If you join HostingAssured you get limited access to Alertra anyway.

You have to pay for hostingassured though if I remember correctly ... please correct me if I'm wrong.

Nah, only if you want to be listed on their site. You can use the customer reviews/uptime monitoring features for free.
